Welcome to Discover Mojave Outdoor World

General Information about the Program

Have you ever watched the excitement on a child’s face as she gets into a canoe for the first time? Or watched a child peer through his binoculars at a mallard duck? And then listened to the excitement in his voice as he describes the bird? The Discover Mojave Outdoor World program introduces urban youth, ages 8-12, to the joys and wonders of the outdoor world through a variety of outdoor recreational activities. A growing body of research provides convincing evidence that a love of nature and a positive environmental ethic grow out of children's regular contact with and play in the natural world. While the emphasis is on fun and recreational learning, the program has a larger goal of fostering a belief that outdoor recreation plays an important and positive role in the health and fitness of America’s youth.

Check out the different events currently being developed and offered in Southern Nevada. The descriptions are very general - event itineraries and locations vary with time of year, type of group, and group location.

The program targets children who would not ordinarily have the opportunity or financial means to participate in outdoor recreational activities on public lands. Activities are currently being offered to children in two programs: kids participating in Clark County Parks and Community Services’ RecMobile program and 5th graders participating in an after-school club at Paradise Professional Development School. Plans are being made to work with additional partners that target urban inner-city and at-risk youth. If you have a similar group and would like to learn more about the Discover Mojave Outdoor World Program, please contact the Project Manager Daphne Sewing.
